Making Palarong Pinoy A Mini-Olympics For The Company


The Traditional Filipino Games are back in the mainstream of society.  At the turn of the century, the revival started in community-barangays and in schools.  

Today, Filipino corporations are getting into the game; energizing employees with games that they use to play in the childhood years.  


More and more Filipino corporations are organizing Palarong Pinoy sports fests. This year, over 500 organizations have discovered the fun of having a Larong Pinoy Mini-Olympics ---- with teams playing Patintero, Luksong Tinik, Luksong Lubid, Tumbang Preso, Sipang Bilangan, and other Filipino traditional street games.  

Human Resource Managers have testified that a Larong Pinoy Sports Fest is truly a one-of-kind event-activity that leaves lasting impression among employees. It bonds employees like real “magkababata” (i.e., childhood friends). 


Playing the Traditional Filipino Street Games has become an alternative to implementing the usual Western sports activities. 

For many years, many companies have been organizing popular sports like basketball or volleyball; and usually, only younger employees get to play in the tournaments.  

In Larong Pinoy games, everybody --- young and old --- were able participate in almost every type of game.  It was so fun that even employees who did not play enjoyed the event, cheering, "jeering" and supporting their teams in every game.  The fun is unforgettable.  And best of all, employees who do not know each other become familiar with everyone.


The organizers of Palarong Pinoy events is an organization called Magna Kultura Foundation, an education-for-development NGO that has been advocating grassroots cultural activities in the Philippines.  Magna Kultura revived the Traditional Filipino Street Games back into the mainstream of society with sports clinics and tournaments that are conducted in barangay communities and in schools.  


In the Y-2008, HRDs of Filipino companies started calling on Magna Kultura to organize team-building activities using Larong Pinoy games as platform for bonding employees.  Magna Kultura organized the company sports fests, hassle-free for the HRDs: from planning to implementation, with tournament systems & procedures, game manuals with playing rules for each and every Filipino game; and running the games with referees and game marshals. The company’s organizing committee just sat back and relaxed; playing with the rest of their fellow-employees. 

Magna Kultura continues to conduct Palarong Pinoy sports fests for companies, on top of their on-going sports outreach programs in schools and barangays.  Magna Kultura works with HRDs and sports committees to conduct “proudly Pinoy” games that transforms the Filipino work-force into Communi-Teams.

Human Resources Managers have been partnering with Magna Kultura Foundation, a national NGO advocating the Filipino Games. And Magna Kultura works closely with the HRD to internally organize the activity --- from registration to the general meeting with the Team Captains.
Larong Pinoy games are used as activity platform for Mini-Olympics Sports Fest. Employees are divided into teams (with team captains and coaches), competing in games like Patintero, Tumbang Preso, Jumping Rope, Sipang Bilangan, and various Pinoy games.

Magna Kultura will organize everything for your company, hassel-free ---- so the HRD and sports committee can play with the rest of the employees --- while they do the implementation!

The sports fest are organized by Magna Kultura Foundation for HRD staff, complete with Tournament Systems & Procedures, the Referees and Marshal Manpower, Game Materials, Field Equipments, Registration Forms, Tournament Manual with Rules for each and every game. It s like an Olympics game ---- but very Filipino in spirit.

Nilalaro Ang Mga Larong Pinoy Sa Mga Lokal Na Kumpanya



Ang pagpapalakas ng samahan ng mga empleyado sa opisina ay mahalaga sa bawat kumpanya. Kaya naman puspusan ang paghahanap ng Human Resource Department (HRD) ng mga Team-Building Activities na makapapahusay ng samahan sa opisina.

Maraming kumpanya ang madalas mag-Team Building. At kadalasan sila ay nag-a-outing sa beach, o di kaya'y nagsasagawa ng sports fest. At kapag may sports fest, kadalasan, ang ginagawa'y basketball, volleyball, badminton, o di kaya'y track and field games. Masaya, at maganda ang resulta, dahil nabibigyan ang mga empleyado ng panahon upang mag-relax at magsama-sama ng labas sa trabaho.

Taon-taon ay naghahanap ng mga pakulo ang mga Human Resource Department's (HRD) ng bawat kumpanya ng aktibidades na maaring ilunsad para sa mga empleyado. Kailangang maging masaya at kung maari'y kakaiba, dahil kapag paulit-ulit ay nagsasawa ang empleyado --- at minsa'y ayaw na ring dumalo.




LARONG PINOY, GINAWANG TEAM-BUILDING ACTIVITY


Noong taong 2009, may mga kumpanyang naka-diskubre ng "lumang" laro na matagal nang hindi nalalaro ng mga taong may edad --- ang Larong Pinoy! Naisip ng mga HRD na subukang magsagawa ng Sports Fest na gamit ang mga Larong Kalye para sa mga empleyado. Nadiskubre ng mga HRD ang pangkat ng Magna Kultura Foundation (isang NGO) na nagsasagawa ng mga Larong Pinoy bilang mini-Olympics, at ito ay sinubukan nila.

Sa pag-anunsyo ng HRD na Larong Pinoy ang susunod na Sports Fest ng kanilang kumpanya, nakita nila ang mga bata at matandang empleyado na nabuhay sa tuwa. Isang buwan pa bago maganap ang palaro ay excited na ang lahat; puno ng sigla ang mga empleyado, nagmi-meeting at parang mga batang nagpa-practice. Sa opisina pa lamang ay buhay-na-buhay ang pagba-bonding ng lahat.

Matagal nang naghahanap ang HRD ng ganitong klaseng pakulo --- ang makapaglunsad ng pakulo na makakapag-Team Building at makakapag-palaro na masaya. 

At kung "challenging" na laro ang hanap ng mga empleyado, matinding aksyon at hamon ang kaharap nila sa Palarong Pinoy. Bawat laro ay kasing husay at minsa'y higit pa kaysa mga Western Olympic games. Hindi basta-bastang pambata ang mga laro: kailangan ng liksi, talas ng isip at "strategy" para manalo. Ang ginagawa ng mga empleyado ay humihirang sila ng Team Captains at Team Coach. Parang tutoong tournament!

Marami nang Pinoy ang muling nadidiskubre ang Larong Pinoy --- patintero, tumbang preso, siyato, atbp.  Mula taong 2010 hanggang sa kasalukuyan, mahigit 500 nang lokal na kumpanya ang nagsasagawa ng company sports fest na Larong Pinoy ang tema. 

Piniling laruin ng empleyado ang mga larong kalye kapalit ng madalas nilang nilalarong basketbol, volleyball, at western sports. Mas marami ang nakakapaglaro! At kahit ang ibang taong hindi naglalaro (na nanunod lang) ay hagalpak sa tuwang nakikita ang kapuwa empleyadong naglalarong parang mga bata.

At maganda din ang nagiging epekto sa kumpanya Larong Pinoy Sports Fest: nagiging Team Building, na nakakapagpalakas ng bonding ng bawat empleyado. Gaya ng mga larong kalye nung kabataan nila, ang mga empleyadong nakapaglaro ng Larong Pinoy ay nagiging parang "magkababata" --- kaya't lumalakas ang samahan sa opisina. At yung mga empleyadong dating hindi magkakilala ay nagkakabati-an na rin matapos palaro.

Marami nang kumpanya na ang nabibigyan Magna Kultura Foundation ng Larong Pinoy. Marami sa kumpanya ang umuulit, lalo na ang mga bagong tatag na kumpanya, dahil sa maikling panahon naidudulot nito ang magkaroon ng matibay na pagsasama ang bawat empleyado. Kahit bagong kumpanya ay parang matagal na ang pagsasama ng lahat --parang "magkababata" ang bawat isa.


BUHAY NA BUHAY ANG MGA LARONG PINOY

Kahit sa panahon ng makabagong teknolohiya at modernisasyon, buhay-na-buhay ang mga larong Pinoy. Dahil marami pa ring di nakakabili bg mg high-tech na laruan at computer, nilalaro pa rin ito ng mga bata sa mga lungsod at probinsiya.  Kahit minsanang nagpupunta sila sa mga internet shop, matapos maubos ang bente o kuwarenta pesos na pang-computer, sa labas pa rin ang takbo ng mga bata para maki-paglaro sa kapit-bahay.

Ngayong malaki na ang mga dating kabataan, at nagtatrabaho na sila sa opisina; maganda’t nalalaro pa rin nila ang mga kilalang laro sa pagkabata.  Napapatiling buhay ang tradisyon at diwang makabayan. Iba na nga lang ang kanilang mga kalaro, at pare-pareho na silang may edad.  Pero nandoon pa rin ang saya ng paglalaro.

Kahanga-hanga ang mga empleyadong na nakaka-isip na magbalik-tanaw sa mga tradisyunal na laro, at ipamahaging muli ito sa kanilang mga ka-opisina bilang palaro sa kanilang kumpaniya. Di lamang nila binubuhay ang mga laro, kundi pinalalakas ang samahan ng bawat isa sa opisina na parang magkababata. Matapos ang palaro, lalong nagiging masaya ang bawat isa.

Buhayin natin ang larong Pinoy.  Sa masayang paraan, gamitin natin itong daan upang buhayin ang diwang makabayan.  Balang araw, ang mga mamamayan (bata man o may edad) ay sasali sa liga ng lipunan.  Sa laro ng buhay, sila ay titindig bilang mga Pilipino sa mundo.

The Traditional Filipino Games as Team-Building Sports Fest

There comes a time when colleagues need to team-away from regular work environment, to rejuvenate and bond in a fun atmosphere.  Because people work hard, we give them time to play hard, and re-bond with their colleagues in an atmosphere of fun and friendly competition. 

There are many activities with great team-building concepts. Other than management-staff workshops, one of the most often used platforms for team-building is SPORTS.  Everybody loves to play games. 

Corporate Olympics is one of the fun activities popularly organized by the Human Resource Departments for employees.   

Corporate sporting events aim to strengthen the bond between employees, while instilling the value of team spirit in a corporate community. In the same note, it hopes to develop the employees’ competitive character and determination to excel.  Teams that play together, work together.

A current, and successful, trend in team building is having teams work together in various Group Dynamics Team Building exercises outside of their normal job duties. 

These can range from working together as a team doing crafts and activities, at times with group activity challenges against other team. Team Building sessions such as this focus on communication, trust, allocating roles, and learning how to work together.

Another often organized activity is corporate excursions.  Employees love to go “outing” and do leisurely activities together with colleagues. Company excursions range from day-tours to beach outings, and usually combined with light team-building activities. It’s all about spending time together. 


Since the 1980’s there have been many new ideas and innovative games. Other than the usual basketball or track and field games, companies have been trying more daring activities, such as “Survival” games and other adventure sports.   

While these games may be challenging to younger employees, there are still many who may not be able to participate in the activities; most especially that the work-force are not up to much physical activities, not to mention the older staff.

Team Building creates a more effective and efficient work-force.  Whatever type of activity the company chooses, more importantly, the rule of thumb is to keep it Fun, Entertaining, Dynamic and Simple.

Magna Kultura Foundation has been implementing arts and cultural programs in schools and city festivals.  In Y2005, Human Resource Departments started calling on Magna Kultura to create customized team-building programs, ranging from visual arts activities, to stage theatre, to kite-making and other crafts workshops.  And for sports oriented companies, they have a selection of different type of fun games.

Since Y2008, many have opted to launch mini-Olympics event using the Traditional Filipino Street Games. The selection of Larong Pinoy as a Sports Fest Activity was intended Human Resource staff to involve employees ---both young and old--- into doing an alternative event instead of the usual western sports.




It is a fact that only a few employees get to play in the usual sports like basketball, volleyball, or other western sports; but with Larong Pinoy everybody can play --- from the executives to staff, down to the clerks and general service employees.  It’s a game everybody knows.  It’s a game everyone can enjoy --- even the non-sporty type. Even those who don’t play enjoy just watching others play. 
 

With Larong Pinoy as sports fest platform, the team bonding goals flows naturally among employees and staff, internally at the office until the day of the event. It becomes the “talk-of-the-town”, everyone remembering childhood memories, making the office alive with youthful camaraderie.

Corporate sports fests  are usually games for only a few employees, and others simply become bystanders who attend because of compliance for attendance. It should not be the case.  In building the company as a CommuniTeam, employees at all levels must be involved in something that everyone can participate in. 

Teambuilding activities are loads of fun, but they can also be tools for strengthening your group.  Sports jargon often crosses over into the business world. The practice is used frequently in the business arena and in the sports world alike and has been credited with creating successful units time and time again.   

Employees "come together as a team" and "go for the win" when tackling an important project. The business owner, the managers, and the Department Heads are likened to team coaches. 

Bear in mind that playing sports can be a good team-building exercise that shows employees and management how to come together in pursuit of a common goal.

Treat your employees to a fun team-building activity, and your company into a CommuniTeam.
